Spanners and sockets

You will need a variety of spanners and sockets for your car restoration depending on what vehicle you want to restore some cars use whitworth sizes (such as early british cars) some are imperial sizes (inches and feet) and some will be metric (millimetres, centimetres and metres). So when you have chosen your restoration project you will need to decide on what type of measurement that vehicle uses before you buy any spanners or sockets.Spanners and sockets are available at any good tool suppliers but be careful when buying cheap sets pay a little extra for a better set(you dont want to lose your knuckles when they slip off or snap very painful).Right we will start with spanners. There are allsorts of lengths and shapes to choose from we your normal flat spanner either short or long, swan neck again short or long and curved spanners but you will find that a basic set of flat ones will be sufficient as most classic cars have quite a lot of room to work in unlike most modern cars.

We have your basic flat combination spanner with one end open and the other a ring shape for a good grip

,we have the swan neck or offset spanner

and we have a curved or half moon shape.

Lets look at sockets again we have a variety. Short, standard, deep and extra deep lengths and different drive sizes 1/4,3/8,1/2,3/4 and 1 inch drives. You will probably get by with 1/2 inch drive as it will give strength and accesibility myself i use 3/8 and 1/2 inch which gives both. socket sets again are cheap to buy and come in sets with 1/4,3/8 and 1/2 inch.(remember dont buy the cheapest set you find it will not be cost effective and painful).
